Abigail’s entire body trembled as she tried to wake up. The scent of smoke wafted to her, incredibly close, along with the feeling of heat. Was she near a fire? Her head throbbed and her mind felt muddled. Trying to open her eyes, she blinked several times. As her mind slowly regained awareness, she began to register pain in her wrists and arms, as if she had slept too long in one position. Voices, some amused, but many upset, drifted to her ears, and finally, she was able to open her heavy lids. Immediately, she regretted it. The sight that befell her was one of absolute horror.

People, all of them with bronze skin and long dark hair, were gathered around her, in every direction. The bright light of flames came from below her, and when Abigail looked down, she sucked in a scream. Looking up, she suddenly understood. She was tied to a large wooden pole, her bound hands tied to the top, and her bound feet also wrapped and tied to it. Below her, the flames of a giant bonfire licked their way to her. Abigail started to hyperventilate. Eventually, the events of the night were too much, and she cried out, part scream, part plea for help.

Many of the people staring up at her looked angry, and she could only assume it was she they were angry with, that is, until she noticed the pack of coyote’s patrolling the outer ranks of people, snapping at them to keep them in place. A loud voice boomed over the crowd, effectively silencing it.

“This, my people, is what keeps our kind locked on this side of the gulch. A witch! Because of her ancestors, we are forbidden to cross the gulch, to reap the harvests to be found out there on their side. We are caged by their magic, but tonight, it will end! With her sacrifice, the magic of the Walkers will be broken! There must always be four, or their powers vanish! Tonight, I, your chief, offer you freedom!”

Out in the crowd, a cougar moved from the darkness, muscles hunched, eyes aglow, and Abigail’s heart constricted. She knew that mountain lion. Had he been sent to spy on her all this time? As she watched, the lion morphed into a man. Abigail sucked in her breath. So, it was true!

“This is not freedom you offer! This is violence, disgrace! I was assigned to this witch the moment she was born, to watch over her. In all that time all I have ever seen from her, or her entire family, is kindness, love for nature and others! Yet you put her up there when she has done nothing to us!”

Abigail stared at the man. On the one side, she was moved by his words, on the other, she couldn’t believe he had been spying on her.

The chief hollered back. “Nothing to us, you ask? Here hangs a descendant of the very Walker who took one of our own, and what has she done? She had bewitched one of ours!” The murmur in the crowd grew loudly.
